About This Spot

Stepping into Cafetería Mallorca in the heart of Old San Juan is like slipping into a quieter rhythm of the island’s everyday life. The pace here invites you to slow down, if only for a little while, amidst the hum of a familiar neighborhood spot where time reflects a gentler, more relaxed beat. The simplicity of the setting—modest seating, an unassuming interior, and an ever-present sense of routine—creates an intimate space where locals and visitors alike share moments over warm, comforting food.

This is the kind of place where the aroma of freshly baked mallorcas—slightly sweet pastries dusted with powdered sugar—fills the air and draws you toward the counter. The offerings don’t merely fill plates; they present a story of island flavors, lovingly prepared and served without rush. Breakfast sandwiches here transform the ordinary into something quietly delightful, the way the sweet crust of a mallorca balances tender ham and melted cheese, or how a cup of smooth, rich hot chocolate complements the morning’s pace.

Though it might not cater to the hurried diner, Cafetería Mallorca’s slower rhythm encourages a sense of presence, a chance to savor the layers of local tradition carried in each dish. Whether it’s a simple pairing of eggs done your way with rice and beans, or a breakfast sandwich that marries sweet and savory in an unexpected yet harmonious way, each bite invites a pause—a moment to witness the care behind the fare and the warmth behind the service.

The charm of the place extends beyond food; it is found in the human touches, in the attentive gestures of an elder server who moves with practiced ease, greeting guests with quiet familiarity and a friendly smile. Seating is shared, tables might not always be pristine, but there’s a gentle understanding in this space that embraces imperfection—it feels less like a transactional stop and more like a small shared gathering.

In a city known for its vibrant energy and historic allure, Cafetería Mallorca offers a gentler, softer experience: the joy of simple, honest sustenance and the comfort of feeling that you’ve found a local secret worth lingering for, even if just for a fleeting breakfast or a midday pause.

Cafetería Mallorca in Old San Juan is a no-frills cafeteria spot that’s perfect if you’re looking for something quick and inexpensive. The prices are affordable and the food comes out pretty fast, which is great when you don’t want to sit around waiting. One of the more interesting things on the menu is their breakfast sandwiches topped with powdered sugar it sounds unusual at first, but it actually works and tastes really good. Simple, quick, and budget-friendly spot for breakfast in Old San Juan.

Loved it, service is a little slower but it seems like an very older gentleman takes orders & serves the food by himself. Seating is limited and my advice is if you see an open table go ahead and seat yourself, even if the table is not cleaned, the older gentleman will clean it. It seems like he knows who has recently sat down. The food was delicious, my wife & I each got a ham, egg, & cheese mallorca and we both loved them. I also had French fries which were very fresh & hot (so hot I had to wait a little bit for them to cool down). My wife got a papaya shake which she couldn't stop telling me about how good it was and kept offering me some. I recommend this place but get there early because again Seating is limited. The price was very generous, for 2 ham, egg, & cheese mallorca, French fries, a papaya shake, a 12 oz sprite, 2 16 oz dasani bottle water and tax came to a little over $20 . The decor needs some work but the food is so delicious you barely notice, this is a very mom & pop establishment. If you're in Old San Juan or San Juan or heck in Puerto Rico I definitely suggest you go here.

Mallorca ham, egg, cheese was very tasty. The pork with rice and beans was a good value at 13.95. The service was slow but it is island time, take your time and enjoy. Practice your Spanish before coming, our waiter and person checking us out only spoke Spanish.

Don’t even have the words to describe this place. I have been thinking about my Mallorca with eggs and swiss ever since I walked out the door after paying. I immediately searched where I can get mallorcas in the city I live in once I’m back. Our waiter was the best part of this restaurant he was so edgy and hilarious but still kind and tended to our needs before we even asked. The pastries were incredible, the drinks were great, and the vibe was 10/10. It’s such a shame there are no local PR restaurants like this in my city, I’m craving my order again

This was my first mallorca experience, and it was by far the best! These are the best version of breakfast sandwiches I've ever had -- so flaky, buttery, and decadent. I usually don't like sweet savory foods, so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the melt-in-your-mouth powdered sugar coating. My brother was licking the plate afterwards. My favorite was the ham, cheese, and egg Mallorca. The bacon is crispy and plentiful, but I don't think it's necessary. The chicken fricasee, recommended to us by our waiter, was also very delicious! Saucy, flavorful, with tender chicken, pairing perfectly with the seasoned rice and beans. I'd get this again as well. The orange juice tasted a bit watered down but was very refreshing. My only regret was that we didn't try the mallorca on its own -- it looked beautifully soft and fluffy! Definitely one of my favorite food experiences in Puerto Rico. A must-visit!

Easily the best breakfast spot I’ve had the pleasure of enjoying in PR. I’ll be back every time. It has a homey feel. I had a mallorca with bacon, ham, egg, and Swiss cheese, something other than avena (didn’t get the name), and a coffee — so good. Brian’s service and attentiveness was great at the countertop. The cashier with the bangs wasn’t as warm, but everyone else was kind.

Great food, quick service, fair price! Loved the Mallorca and fresh squeezed orange juice. Coffee was delicious and strong (made in a very cool old machine). Would love to go back for pastries! Get there early if you don’t want to wait
